2010 Course Descriptions

All of our courses are focused on educating individuals to the joys of sailing. We utilize U.S. Sailing certified instructors in all of our youth courses. The boats we sail are Vanguard 420's which are ideal - they are simple enough to be operated by two students with limited experience, yet they have most all of the complexities of larger keelboats sailing in the ocean. These are operated out of Norton Pond. We also have a keelboat which we operate out of Lincolnville Beach.

  • Introductory Sailing

The Introductory Sailing class is focused on students ages 8~10. Class size is limited to 4 so that we can place two sailors and one instructor in each boat to maintain a safe and fun learning environment. Our focus is to spark an interest in sailing in young kids. They are encouraged to repeat this course over the course of the summer.

  • Beginner Youth

Our Beginner/Intermediate Youth course is focused on providing kids with a fun opportunity to learn and hone basic sailing skills. Norton Pond offers warm waters, gentle breezes, and minimal boat traffic in which to safely practice sailing. All students are issued a U.S. Sailing textbook from which we instruct in all the topics necessary to sail with confidence. It's not unheard of for our students to be sailing solo by the end of the course! This is a full day class and students should come prepared with lunch, clothing, etc. to be out of the house for six hours. Ages 10 and up.

  • Advanced Sailing

For those young adults who have already got the rudimentary skills down pat and want to progress in sailing we will offer a one week Advanced course at the end of the summer. The intent of this course is to expose students to sailing opportunities outside of Norton Pond. We plan to race on the pond, sail with other clubs in the ocean, get some keelboat experience, and possibly participate in some of the local competitions held in the mid-coast harbors. Youth who have successfully completed a Beginner/Intermediate course are eligible.

Leave the testosterone at home for a new adventure with your girlfriends. At the end of seven weeks you will be confidently sailing our two person 420's as skipper and crew. The content is similar to our adult sailing course.

  • Adult Sailing

The Adult Sailing class is focused on those who see all the sailing here in the mid-coast, but find it just out of reach. Here is an inexpensive way to get out on a protected body of water and learn a skill that you can take anywhere. It's perfect for spouses, father/son or mother/daughter, and friends who just want to spend a few hours of fun each week relaxing on our beautiful Maine summer evenings. The first four weeks will be taught on the lake and the last three weeks will be on the ocean in our keel boat. The content is similar to our youth courses, but presented in a more mature level.

  • Introduction to Ocean Sailing

Introduction to Ocean Sailing is intended for those adults who know the ropes, but feel they could use a bit more experience before sailing with confidence on the ocean. Evenings will be spent building up that confidence with time at the helm sailing Penobscot bay. In addition, we will hold discussions on all things sailing; charts, navigation, safety, reefing, sail trim, radio communication, weather, etc. This class is not intended for the first time sailor.
